Summer 2020 may have gotten off to a shaky start this year, but those of us lucky enough to be out of lockdown (at least temporarily) are embarking on our annual love affair with the sun known as summer vacation.

Whether you're staycationing or jonesing for a dose of Vitamin Sea, chances are you're finally getting some sun exposure on your skin.

And while that's great for your Vitamin D supplies — especially for those of us who live in northern climes — it can also lead to uneven skin tones if you don't take the right precautions.

But what causes uneven skin tone? And how can you reduce it?

What Causes Uneven Skin Tone?


Uneven skin tone is caused by the overproduction of melanin in the skin, leading to dark patches and creating an inconsistent blotchy appearance.
All skin types are susceptible to uneven skin tones, and in melanin-rich skin, it shows up as dark patches.

The main causes of uneven skin tone are:

Sun Exposure — UV rays cause sun damage, giving the skin a darker appearance than usual.

  • Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation — acne and other inflammations of the skin can leave behind darker patches known as hyperpigmentation.

  • Hormonal Changes — fluctuations caused by pregnancy or hormonal contraceptives can cause the skin to become darker. This is known as melasma and is more common in women than in men.

  • Aging — as you age, you may notice your skin tone becoming more uneven due to a combination of the factors mentioned above.

This includes:

- Using sunscreen year-round, no matter how melanin-rich your skin is

- Drinking plenty of water

- Eating a diet rich in vegetables and fruits that are loaded with antioxidants and avoiding ultra-processed foods

  1. Lemon, Sugar, and Coconut Scrub


The citric acid in lemon has lightening properties that help reduce uneven skin tone.

Sugar acts as a gentle exfoliant, sloughing off dead skin cells for a brighter complexion, while coconut oil nourishes and moisturizes the skin.

Ingredients:

  • 1 tsp coconut oil

  • ½ tsp lemon juice

  • 1 tbsp granulated sugar


Method:

  1. Mix the ingredients together in a bowl

  2. Apply to your face, avoiding the eye area, and scrub gently.

  3. Rinse your face with lukewarm water and gently pat dry.

  1. Lemon, Honey, Nutmeg, and Cinnamon Mask


The citric acid in this mask brightens your skin, while the soothing antibacterial properties of honey reduce acne and moisturize.

Nutmeg reduces the appearance of pigmentation, while cinnamon has anti-inflammatory properties.

This mask is a one-stop-shop for reducing uneven skin tone!

Ingredients:

  • ½ tsp lemon juice

  • 1 tbsp honey

  • ½ tsp nutmeg

  • ½ tsp cinnamon


Method:

  1. Mix the ingredients together in a bowl

  2. Apply to your face using gentle massaging movements and leave for 20-30 minutes.

  3. Remove the mask with your fingers, using circular movements.

Don't be fooled by this deceptively simple remedy.
Tomatoes are rich in antioxidants, which help to prevent pigmentation by reducing harmful free radicals.

Ingredients:

  • One fresh tomato


Method:

  1. Wash the tomato and cut it in half

  2. Rub the pulp onto your skin and leave for 20 minutes

  3. Rinse with cold water
